Learn About Food Safety For Kids

Safety and sanitation in the kitchen

Most kids really enjoy helping out int he kitchen. It is important, however, for them to learn some food safety tips while they are cooking. With this emphasis on food safety for kids, safety and sanitation in the kitchen can be maintained. Kitchen hygiene is particularly important to ensure the health and safety of all those involved.

A key aspect of food safety for kids is how to handle meat safely. In order to ensure food handling safety, kids need to be taught to keep meat stored on a low shelf in the refrigerator. This is so drippings will not leak onto other foods and contaminate other foods.

Because 830 bacteria reside on each square inch of kitchen floor space in the area in front of the average kitchen sink, kitchen sanitation is of top priority. In fact, Clemson University researchers have determined that salmonella can live for four weeks on a variety of different surfaces including carpet, wood and tile. Because bacteria thrive in temperatures between 41 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit, it is important to keep foods either below or above these temperatures.
